End the Silence

Description

I drew this for the National Day of Silence which is a youth movement protesting the silence faced by those of different races, religions, ethnic groups, sexual orientation, and the suffering from various disabilities. The silence is meant to echo the silence caused by harassment, prejudice, and discrimination. (Someone who signed up can't talk the entire day.)

I offered to draw this to put on the sign up table for the event.

Symbolism:
The Man on the Left- a Jew but also represents all religious beliefs suppressed by hate.
The Man in the Middle- a gay man, represents well the whole gay community and is the main focus of our school's protest.
The Woman on the Right- a person against violence for all the lives it destroys. (RIP students in Virgina Tech.)
There are no faces because they represent a group and individual features draw away from the concept.
The black and white is the narrow view of the world around us.
The duct tape over the mouths is for silence....

I also signed with my full name, which I never do for my artwork, but I felt this was important enough to make an exception.

This is intense. In a good way, mind you.
